How to Label a Patch Panel

A durable labeling system connects four facts: panel, port, cable ID, and the opposite endpoint. Record them once, then generate every artifact from that record.

Step-by-step labeling workflow

  1. Choose a naming convention. Use compact, stable codes such as PP01 for a panel and SW01 for a switch.
  2. Record both endpoints. A port number without its opposite endpoint is not enough for troubleshooting.
  3. Assign a cable ID. In the example, C-007 ties PP01-07 to SW01-18.
  4. Generate the panel strip. The strip shows the ordered patch-panel ports and their compact destinations.
  5. Label both cable ends. The A label identifies PP01-07 and points to SW01-18; the B label reverses that relationship while keeping C-007.
  6. Measure and test print. Enter the real port-center pitch, print at Actual Size / 100%, and check alignment on plain paper.
  7. Keep the handoff schedule. Export the normalized CSV/PDF so later changes can be traced and regenerated.
